The two officers who are assigned to the crime prevention unit, are also G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) trained officers. Both officers have successfully completed the two week GREAT program which enables them to teach the GREAT program in our schools.
The GREAT program is taught in all elementary and middle schools within the city’s jurisdiction. Part of the GREAT curriculum consists of a community service project. For example, in 2010 students participated in a food drive in cooperation with their school. Also in 2010, all first grade classes were met with for six weeks to discuss traffic safety, stranger safety, and poison control. In all Crime Prevention maintained direct day to day contact with well over twelve hundred students at seven different schools with children ranging from the ages of six to thirteen. The GREAT program teaches students to be aware of gang activity and how to resist gang influence as well as educating and training students on all aspects of gangs.
